The family home was packed with recordings of British classics (Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Goon Show, Blackadder), as well as US comedians like Steve Martin since James and Wendy were ex-hippies and comedy aficionados.

Martin performed on stage while sporting the school’s uniform while attending an all-girls school. Martin claims that because their parents are accommodating and Toronto is a welcoming city, their upbringing has been like a “liberal utopia” in terms of sexuality.

Their Mae Martin: Us performance at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival inspired the BBC Radio 4 program Mae Martin’s Guide to 21st Century Sexuality. Martin co-hosted GrownUpLand and made appearances on the British radio and television show The Now Show.

The title of the 2017 Edinburgh production, “Dope,” alludes to both prescription pharmaceuticals and the brain chemical dopamine, which is linked to obsessive behavior. But, love may also be a drug.

It was founded on years of study and drew from the work of Dr. Gabor Maté, who defined addiction as any action or substance that a person does to temporarily ease the pain but that has unfavorable long-term effects.

Without treating the underlying source of the pain, even if a person tries to quit, they will eventually seek more relief and be more likely to relapse.

According to this description, a variety of items in contemporary culture, including sex, food, job, social media, and, of course, drugs, have the potential to become addictive. The 2017 two-part Mae Martin’s Guide to 21st Century Addiction included Maté.

Dope, a film about Martin’s addictive personality, was transformed into a half-hour Netflix comedy special, which was published in January 2019 as a part of the Comedians of the World collection. They characterized it as being like having “an easily-awoken psychotic shrimp” in their mind.

As a result, Martin co-created, wrote, and performed in the comedy series Feel Good for Channel 4 and Netflix. In 2021, the second season was made available.

They made an appearance in LOL: Last One Laughing Canada in 2022. Later that year, they had a recurring appearance as Grace St. James in the HBO Max series The Flight Attendant.

A “teen thriller comedy” with Netflix is now in production. Along with Gene, a thriller, Martin is also creating two more movies with writing partner Hampson.
